Business community of Kyrgyzstan calls for stability in the country

March 25, 2016

Sustainable economic development of Kyrgyzstan is impossible without the involvement of foreign direct investment. To attract investment and develop businesses, the country should ensure political and social stability.

Investors’ surveys that the International Business Council (IBC) has been conducted for fifteen years showed that investors’ confidence sharply decreased after political events in Kyrgyzstan, IBC Executive Director Temirbek Azhykulov said at a press conference held on June 24 at the AKIpress news agency.

The press conference on the theme “Business community of Kyrgyzstan calls for stability in the country" was also attended by Executive Director of the JIA Business Association Ruslan Akmatbek, CCI Deputy Board Chairman Nurlan Musuraliev, representative of the Union of Kyrgyz Entrepreneurs Talantbek Jumabekov and Head of the NABA Secretariat Elvira Borombaeva.

"Investors are most concerned about the country risks when making decisions,” said Azhykulov. “According to the IBC surveys, there was large and sustained decline in investment, up to 55 percent in 2005 and 2010. Moreover, after the Tulip Revolution in March 2005, the recession lasted until July 2017, and the same decline was observed after events in 2010. Several companies with foreign capital left our market. The presence of such companies in Kyrgyzstan not only provided additional jobs and tax revenues to the state budget but also promoted the country’s investment image in the world market. When companies leave the country, its image is deteriorating.”

On behalf of IBC, Azhykulov appealed to the society and decision makers to be reasonable and "think about the consequences in case events that we talked about occur."

When making decisions, investors have to forecast the economic situation in the country, said Ruslan Akmatbek. "We call on domestic investors to invest in the regions. But businessmen, who intend to invest, shall be sure in safety of their capital in the regions."

In addition, political unrest and rallies have a negative impact on the business activity, and business is suffering losses. “We must also consider that the development of such events suspend business decisions,” Ruslan Akmatbek added.

Representatives of business associations called on compatriots to preserve stability in the country, addressing issues through peaceful negotiations.
