Scottish Highland Games athletes to take part in the World Nomad Games

August 22, 2018

The UK will be represented at the Third World Nomad Games by four Scottish Highland Games athletes and a group of six musicians from 19th Regiment Royal Artillery (The Scottish Gunners) and an accompanying officer in charge, the British Embassy in Kyrgyzstan said.

Baroness Stern CBE, an independent member of the House of Lords of the Parliament of the United Kingdom will also visit Kyrgyzstan from 31 August - 7 September. Her programme will include the WNG and further engagements to promote relations between our Parliaments and to exchange experience in penitentiary reform and human rights. Bareness Stern will be accompanied by her husband, Dr Andrew Coyle, CMG Emeritus Professor of Prison Studies at the University of London.

The UK athletes will be accompanied by a military music band, comprised of four pipers and two drummers who will perform at several events during their stay. The athletes will demonstrate four types of traditional heavy athletic events of Scottish Highland Games including; Shott Putt or Stone, Weight for Distance, Hammer, and Tossing the Caber.

Her Majesty’s Ambassador Robin Ord Smith said, “I am extremely proud that for the first time, at the World Nomad Games, we will see representation from the UK. The Scottish Highland Games share historical and cultural importance with many of the nomad games disciplines where athletes demonstrate strength, speed and balance. This is a great opportunity to foster cultural links between our two countries.”

I am also delighted that Baroness Stern will represent the UK. This will be her fourth visit to Kyrgyzstan. We are looking forward to demonstrating Highland Games disciplines and the uniqueness of pipes and drums. I have no doubt that the World Nomad Games will showcase the beauty, history and culture of Kyrgyzstan to the world and will help promote tourism and stimulate trade and investment.”
